Tons of other Edmonton attractions and activities exist outside of the West Edmonton Mall in this lively capitol city. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is an important cultural hub for the prairies. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and more than 30 festival held here each year perfectly compliment the excellent shopping restaurants, and hotels. The popularity of the Edmonton Gay Pride is quickly growing, but so are the other festivals held in the city every year. For music lovers, the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Capital EX, Yardbird Jazz Festival, the Folk Music Festival, Edmonton Labatt’s Blues Festival, and the Symphony Under the Sky are just a few of the events sure to thrill.
The world famous Fringe Festival, the River City Shakespeare Festival, and the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival explore a diverse mix of performing arts and theatre. If you would like to experience various cultures from around the world, the Heritage Festival is the place to go in Canada. The Cariwest Parade that occurs around the same time as the Heritage Festival celebrates Caribbean culture.
When it comes to things to do, Edmonton won’t disappoint! The TELUS World of Science is an amazing place to go regardless of how old you are. The IMAX theatre there plays fantastic movies and there are lots of interactive displays, exhibits, and a planetarium to explore the stars and planets.
The most noticeable sites along the river is the Muttart Conservatory. These three glass pyramids stand proudly along the bank. Inside each one is a specific climate and ecosystem teaching visitors and locals alike about the importance of each and awes them with their unique beauty. For more botanical sites, visit the Devonian Botanic Garden a short drive away.
Many of the museums of the city also thrill the young and old. The Alberta Railway Museum and the C&E Railway Museum explore the history of the railroad in Canada and you can even take a ride one. For air transportation, visit the Alberta Aviation Museum.
The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, John Walter Museum, and Fort Edmonton Park focus on settlers and important people who helped make the city what it is today. These places aren’t all ‘look but don’t touch’ places either. Live actors, activities, and interactive exhibit give you and the kids firsthand experience and are tons of fun. The John Walter Museum, for instance, lets you try your hand at everything from doll making and candle dipping to erecting a house just like they did in the early 1900s.
The shopping and nightlife in Edmonton is alive and well in the city. City centre is a collection of everything from amazing boutiques to big box stores. Many other interesting places to shop include the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market and Whyte Ave close by. The nightlife mainly centers on 82nd Ave with everything from country and western bars, sports pubs, and hip-hop clubs.
The sights and sounds of this busy city offer visitors a taste of the multicultural society that sets the Canadian Prairies apart from so many other places in the world. There are endless opportunities for families and adventurous people to enjoy themselves thoroughly whether they have a day, a week, a month, or a year to spend here.
